Subdocta

The bass music scene has witnessed a dynamic force in the form of SubDocta, a DJ and producer whose energy is as infectious as his beats. I had the privilege of experiencing SubDocta's electrifying set in New York City, where he opened for Barely Alive at Webster Hall. Preston, the man behind SubDocta, is not just a musician; he's a creative powerhouse known for his innovative fusion of styles and a relentless journey that started over a decade ago.

In 2010, while he was a freshman in college, Preston found inspiration to start DJing and producing as he immersed himself in the world of dubstep. He began teaching himself the ropes, playing at house parties, and any other venues available at the time. Approximately ten years ago, Preston delved into production, describing his journey as one marked by "hard-headedness and determination." Recognized for his electrifying live performances, he consistently pushes the boundaries of bass music with his unique production style. Characterizing it as a "wobbly old-school sounding dubstep," Preston acknowledges that this style greatly influenced him during his formative years, yet he refrains from defining his music within any specific genre.

When we asked Preston about his biggest inspirations in the industry, we loved his response. He said, "It's crazy because now they are my friends," which is something I never thought would happen, mentioning names like Rusko, Ganja White Night, Jantsen, Boogie T, and more.

Preston recently released his new EP, "Left for Dead," inspired by the vocals on the track "Left for Dead" by David Vance. He mentioned that when David sent him the vocals, he instantly fell in love with them and was able to mold an entire idea for the tour from these vocals. Preston also mentioned that he grew up in the "wild wild west" with many horses and old-timey photos. Although he recently moved to Nashville, TN, with the album, he wanted to pay homage to Nevada and his roots. As a delightful addition, he put his dogs in sheriff's hats because, well, how awesome is that?

SubDocta is currently embarked on his "Left For Dead" tour, traveling nonstop. We wanted to inquire about his favorite and least favorite aspects of touring. He expressed, "My least favorite is the 23 hours leading up to the set. You're alone a lot, dealing with flights, hotels, Ubers, and Uber Eats. While it sounds cool, the reality is that you go from the airport to the hotel, to the venue, and then do it all in reverse." However, he emphasized that if it wasn't great and something he loved, they wouldn't be doing it, and the time spent on stage truly makes it all worthwhile.

For aspiring DJs and producers, SubDocta offers straightforward advice: "I don't like the word aspiring; you either do something or you don't. So ignore what your parents say, ignore what your friends say, and if you believe in yourself you can do it.” SubDocta's story is a testament to the transformative power of self-belief, showcasing that passion and determination can pave the way to success in the music industry.
